Now that Journey is safely tied up in her new slip, we figured it was an appropriate time to take a look back at the last 8 months and quantitatively summarize our trip from the Chesapeake Bay to Conception Island, Bahamas and back. Here are the numbers in no particular order:
Cruise length: 249 days
Lowest latitude: Thompson Bay, Long Island, Bahamas: 23° 20″ 11′
Cruise distance: 3,220 nautical miles – 2,120 inland & 1,100 off-shore (including Great Bahama Bank)
Number of stops: 107 – most were different but there were some repeats
Travel time: 680 hours – 524 engine hours motoring/ motor-sailing & 156 sail only (mostly Bahamas). We only put 72 hours on the engine in the 3-1/2 months and 880 miles we traveled through the Bahamas
Nights spent at anchor: 151 nights (61%) – dropped the hook 79 times!
Nights spent at free docks: 9 nights (4%) – Thanks North Carolina!
Nights spent at moorings: 52 nights (21%) – 32 of these were in Vero Beach getting ready for the Bahamas
Nights spent at marinas: 36 nights (14%) – 24 of these were on the way down mostly for showers (it was COLD!), provisioning, & we got stuck there because of weather
Fuel consumption: 245 gallons of diesel, thankfully mostly at US prices!
Maintenance: 5 oil & filter changes, 2 zinc anode replacements, 3 bottom/ propeller cleanings (1 by a diver), 1 raw water pump replacement
Cat overboard mishaps: 1 – what a day that was!
Number of times aground: ZERO! We had one little bump in North Lake Worth while looking for a spot to anchor but it was so minor it didn’t even slow us down.
Most consecutive nights at anchor in same spot: Monument Beach, George Town and Ocracoke tied at 14 days
Longest passage: Port Canaveral, FL to Fernandina Beach, FL – 170 nautical miles, 30.4 hours
Number of hurricanes avoided: 1 – Category 2 Hurricane Arthur July 3-4, 2014
Any other numbers interest you? Let us know and we’ll try to calculate them for ya (please don’t ask us about # of bottles of rum consumed, our calculator cannot count that high!)
JR. When are you back at work? Get in touch. I would love to pick your brain about your trip.
Great summary!
It appears that we had a similar experience minus the cat overboard of course. Thank goodness Leo was fine!
Well, howdy neighbor!
Hey! Where y’all at!?
Great stats! It is nice to know that you can go all that way and only have a maximum of 30 hours at sea. I hope to cruise that part of the world in a few years time. :)
Can you please calculate number of days spent with your CFF’s that miss you guys?? J/K Glad to see that you are home safe and sound. Great summary. Big hugs to ya.
